Which cruise line is the best for families?

Well, this one’s up for debate, and rightfully so.  Just in the last year, I’ve seen the cruise lines make a concentrated effort to promote their family-friendly status with some truly amazing entertainment, amenities, programs and shore excursions. You can find examples of imaginative and perfectly tailored programs on almost every line, but this week, I’m taking note of some information that came across my desk for Lindblad Expeditions.  This line is sort of a favorite of …

The Fabled Lands of the North; Lindblad and National Geographic’s latest partnered itinerary

Lindblad Expeditions is a particular favorite of mine to report on, mostly due to their green philosophy and their partnership with National Geographic.  So I’m pleased to see that they’ve announced their newest partnered itinerary,The Fabled Lands of the North.  Scheduled for departure on August 24, 2013, this 15-day voyage on the National Geographic Explorer will visit Greenland, Baffin Island, Newfoundland & Labrador. You CAN Continue Your Exercise Routine While At Sea. (Yay?)

Image courtesy of Royal Caribbean Wheezing my way through another “boot camp” fitness training session with my twenty-something, frustratingly fit instructor this week, my mind, as always, began to question the logic behind my continued workout regime. Is it the approaching milestone birthday that motivates me?  The fact that I am watching friends, even at this relatively young age, having serious health issues that might be helped by diet and exercise?  Is it my competitive spirit, or …

Lindblad Endeavour arrives at Puerto Egas in the Galapagos Islands

Everyone who takes a Galapagos cruise usually has a favorite shore landing. Mine comes unexpectedly almost midway through the trip when Lindblad’s National Geographic Endeavour takes us to Puerto Egas on Isla Santiago (also known as JamesIsland and Isla San Salvador). On our afternoon stop there, everything comes together: the sunlight is gorgeous, we encounter a good variety of birds and mammals and also witness lots of lively animal interaction, including a large bellowing male Galapagos …

Surprises in the Arctic Desert

DAY 7 — WALRUS!   It is 34 degrees and the gusting wind makes it feel a lot colder. I’m hiking behind a man with a rifle, my hands cold inside my two layers of gloves. I’m wearing four layers of clothes as we hike through ankle-deep snow. Did I mention it is July 7th? Welcome to the Arctic. The Lindblad Expedition’s  National Geographic Explorer is at Nordaustlandet (northeast land) the second largest of Svalbard’s islands. On …

The Arctic: A food court for animals

DAY 5  —  FOOD COURT FOR ANIMALS We’re smack in the middle of a bustling fast food court—for Arctic animals. Aboard the Lindblad Expedition’s National Geographic Explorer,  in the Arctic, we’re at the north entrance of Wood fjord in the part of northern Spitsbergen that’s covered with what’s called “fast ice.” Naturalist Ian Bullock explains to me that there is an abundance o food here.  Thus the Eider ducks, the walrus — yes, we see a walrus!– …
