Warm gorgeous pools, friendly staff, bourbon steak, golfers paradise & a small and intimate spa all exceed expectations

“Jewel” Hotel to Consider for Pre or Post Cruise

When we take a Ft. Lauderdale, or Miami-based cruise we always go a few days early to the vicinity. Our hotel of choice: Turnberry Isle, Miami.

While this is a fabulous locale during the cold winter months (for those of us living in northern climes), the Turnberry experience is marvelous at any time of year. We stayed at the hotel on the 4th of July last year and experienced an unforgettable fireworks experience that included 8 separate fireworks displays all viewable from the hotel rooms and golf courses. The truly friendly staff offered complimentary ice cream and treats – overall, a wonderful experience for adults and children alike.

Turnberry Isle Miami – Perfect Stop Before or After Your Cruise

With another cold (Michigan) winter winding down, we decided it was time to make one more ”South Florida Run” before springtime. And while there are many excellent hotels and resorts in that area, it was an easy decision for us. Each of our last 5 visits to South Florida have been to the same destination – Turnberry Isles Resort in Aventura, Florida.

With plentiful plane connections to Ft. Lauderdale, Turnberry is only a 35-minute cab or limousine ride from the airport. After receiving a warm greeting from our bellhop upon arrival, we entered the beautiful marble-tiled facility – the check-in process was both brief and courteous, and we (and our luggage) were in our room inside of ten minutes. After decompressing for a few minutes on our veranda, we proceeded to embark on exploring the numerous pleasurable sojourns for which the resort is justly famous.

This is truly a great location, shopping is abundant, you are close to the little downtown of Hollywood and there are restaurants everywhere, not to mention a short drive to the pier in Miami or ft. Lauderdale. The location is perfect!turnberry1

Pools & Beach
On those occasions when we bring our children/grandchildren, the choice of pool is easy – namely, the Laguna Pool, featuring a 35-foot high waterslide that is the delight of children both small and large. The seating is abundant, there are covered beds, comfortable lounge chairs and of course the gazebos where you have a TV and refrigerator fully stocked with fruit and water. It’s a great way to experience the pool, especially for those who wish to stay out of the sun. The pool is normally warmer than other hotels and this is one of the main reasons we choose Turnberry.

However – when it’s just my spouse and I – we prefer the more sedate Cascata Pool that lies in the heart of the resort. It offers a gorgeous Mediterranean-style décor and ambience, down to the tiki bar that will provide you with frozen cocktails. (They are best enjoyed when accompanied by the superb lobster sandwich.)

And speaking of small children (or their parents simply wishing to relax a bit), don’t miss the “Lazy River” which slowly meanders around the Laguna Pool in a tropical-type forest setting. It comes complete with inner tubes that make for a very relaxing way to enjoy the water.

This is not a pool for the children, however when the family pool heater was not up to par, the pool team generously allowed our little one to use the adult pool

And for those who favor a beach venue, hop the resort shuttle for the 5-minute drive to Turnberry Isle Beach Club. This private club features a heated pool, seaside grill, and beach chairs/private cabanas that will make your stay on their pristine beach a most enjoyable one.

Golf & Spa
These two amenities are grouped together because – simply put – I chose the spa while my husband chose the golf. The spa has been featured on Conde Nast Traveler’s “World’s Best Spas” list, offering 3 different levels of relaxation that include a Fitness Center, Spa Café, and an array of customized treatments and therapies. Relaxation at its finest! The one part I really love are the showers, they are citrus fruit infused so as many showers as one could possibly enjoy are recommended.Turnberry golf

Even so, my husband still believes he got the better end of the deal with an opportunity to play some truly world-class golf on not one, but two, renowned courses. Legends such as Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and Greg Norman have competed on the Soffer and Miller courses (the Soffer is, according to my husband, the more difficult and scenic of the two). Not to be missed: the “island (18th) hole” on the Soffer course. Better pick up a few extra balls at the Pro Shop before tee-off, just in case…

Turnberry 2Dining
Whatever your choice of entertainment, you’re bound to get hungry sooner or later. On the casual side, you’ll enjoy the grilles at the pools and beach, but if you want a serious meal, consider the Corsair by Scott Conant. Don’t miss one of my favorite dining experiences here – their totally over-the-top breakfast brunch, featuring absolutely every kind of breakfast food imaginable, and best enjoyed just outside the restaurant in from of their waterfall display. This is surely the “best way to start your day.”

However, for the resort’s top-of-the-line dining experience, you must try the Bourbon Steak (a Michael Mina restaurant) for at least one dinner outing. Every food item here is exquisite, with my personal favorite being the “Lobster Pot Pie” (which features an entire lobster). I’ve never seen it offered anywhere else, and it’s on my menu at least once during each of my stays at Turnberry Isle.

Accommodations
Clearly no description of Turnberry Isle would do it justice if a few words about a very critical amenity wasn’t mentioned – namely, the rooms. Simply put, they are as plush and as comfortable as you would expect from a world-class resort.

They could use some updating; however, when you look at the overall experience, they are comfortable and clean. The views from every room are magnificent – whether you are viewing the Miami skyline, or the unique banyan trees for which the resort is famous.

The staff
Turnberry has one of the friendliest staffs! The team there truly goes out of their way to make sure your experience is excellent. From the concierge, to the dining room to the maids, they truly care that you come back to see them again.

Ultimately, there is only one thing we do not like about Turnberry Isle – namely, that we eventually have to leave it. Our only consolation is that it will not be long before we return – our Miami “home away from home” at this truly enchanting and memorable resort experience.
