Holland America Line Announces Name of Newest Ship

The newest ship in the Holland America Line will have an old name. Due for delivery in May 2021, the next Pinnacle Class ship will be called – drum roll, please – Ryndam. Holland America Line’s president Orlando Ashford announced the name at a media luncheon aboard Nieuw Statendam before the official start of Seatrade 2019 in Miami. It will be the fourth ship in the company’s history to carry the Ryndam name. “Holland America Line …

Holland America’s Nieuw Statendam has much to offer

By Robert N. Jenkins Art There’s no way to be certain which artworks in the brand-new cruise ship Nieuw Statendam will draw the most attention: Will it be the clear plexiglass, 5-foot-tall statue of David, a copy of Michelangelo’s masterwork, except this one is holding a cellphone in his lowered arm? Or is it the collection of everyday objects — a camera, eyeglasses, high heels, scissors — that are covered in bright cloth that is heavily embroidered? …

Cruising in the Far East with RCI & HAL: Shanghaied Again

ABOARD QUANTUM of the SEAS — Early this morning the Quantum cruised into the mouth of China’s Yangtze River and then turned left on to the Huangpu River.  After docking again at Shanghai’s Wusongkou International Cruise Terminal we had a late leisurely breakfast and waited to disembark after other passengers, as we can’t board the Westerdam until 11AM.  The Westerdam just happens to be conveniently docked bumper-to-bumper in front of the Quantum.  Nevertheless, clearing Chinese immigration in …

Lots of new small ships on order, plus other news from SeaTrade

In March several of us from AllThingsCruise attended SeaTrade, the annual conference of the global cruise industry, which was held in Ft. Lauderdale, Fl. The big news all around is that the cruise industry is booming and there are now over 100 ships on the order books extending through 2030. Cruising with HAL: What’s new on the Zuiderdam

ABOARD THE ZUIDERDAM A Caribbean voyage to the Panama Canal aboard the MS Zuiderdam is an opportunity to take a look at one of Holland America Line’s freshest refurbishings and renovations of one of their popular mid-size ships. While the Zuiderdam is a Vista class ship carrying up to 1,900 passengers and a crew of 900, it is similar in many respects to the 2,137 passenger Signature class MS Eurodam which I wrote about previously ( www.AllThingsCruise.com/ …

‘Playing with food’ a passion for Holland America chef

As a youngster growing up in Austria, Rudi Sodamin would stand by his mother’s side in the family kitchen. He not only liked the smell and taste of food, he liked how it looked. To him, the colorful ingredients were like paint that an artist could use for an edible masterpiece. “Food is the paint of our lives,” he said. “Food is art.” At a pre-Seatrade Cruise Global lunch aboard the Holland America Eurodam in Fort Lauderdale …

O, The Oprah Magazine Adventure of Your Life Cruise aboard HAL: Get your fashion-trendy on with Adam Glassman

by Kathy Witt Special to AllThingsCruise I don’t know about you, but I feel my clothes closet constantly mocks me. While the available real estate is stuffed with tops, bottoms, shoes and accessories, there’s never anything to wear; more specifically, there’s never seems to be anything I can pull together to wear for specific occasions, including traveling. So when O, The Oprah Magazine creative director and style guru Adam Glassman took the stage for a “Love That!” …

O, The Oprah Magazine Adventure of Your Life Cruise aboard HAL: ‘Let’s Eat’ and not gain weight

by Kathy Witt Special to AllThingsCruise Whenever two or more women get together over dinner, the subject of weight inevitably rears its ugly head. This was the case during dinner in the Canaletto restaurant on our first evening aboard Eurodam, traveling from Seattle to Juneau. I had just shared a frightful factoid gleaned from that day’s invitation to come to the Greenhouse Spa & Salon for a chance to win one of $500 worth of giveaways: The …

Oprah celebrates a year of adventure on Holland America’s Eurodam

By Kathy Witt Special to AllThingsCruise I consider myself a well-meaning “fashion don’t” so I’m feeling pretty intimidated about boarding  Holland America’s Eurodam on July15 to travel with high profile fashionista Oprah Winfrey, along with O, The Oprah Magazine editor-at-large Gayle King, editor-in-chief Lucy Kaylin and style guru and creative director Adam Glassman. The cruise, roundtrip from Seattle to Juneau, Glacier Bay, Sitka, Ketchikan in Alaska and Victoria, British Columbia, is the first of five such cruises …
