Disney Fantasy christened in star-studded ceremony

The Disney Fantasy, the fourth ship in the Disney Cruise Line fleet, was christened yesterday (March 1, 2012)  during a star-studded christening celebration at the Manhattan Cruise Terminal. On a night filled with celebrity performances from the likes of Jerry Seinfeld, Neil Patrick Harris, Nick Cannon and Heather Headley, it was Disney Fantasy godmother, Mariah Carey, who took center stage for the christening moment. Similar to the famed New Year’s Eve celebrations in Times Square, Carey led …

New smoking rules clear the air aboard cruise ships

Travelers who loved vacationing on the Carnival Paradise, which once was a cruise ship entirely cigarette smoke free among passengers and crew, have reason to cheer. As 2011 draws toward a close, second-hand smoke at sea is dissipating. With this year’s trend toward prohibiting smoking in cabins and in most gathering spots aboard ships, cruise lines slowly are catching up to the lifestyles of their passengers at home, where work places, public areas, restaurants, and bars are …

Riding AquaDuck on a Disney Dream cruise…fun, wet and easy

Like nearly every other passenger on the new Disney Dream cruise ship, I rode the AquaDuck water coaster during a recent preview sailing. The Duck was fun, wet, and easy. I liked it so much I did it twice. You sit on a raft similar to an air mattress, with pockets for one or two riders, front and back. The raft is propelled by jets of water through a tube that drops, twists, turns, and then, ingeniously, glides along a clear, …

The new Disney Dream is quite elegant, reminiscent of the 1930’s, the ‘golden age of cruising

This morning Chet and I disembarked from the Disney Dream. This was really a very, very fast look at a fascinating ship. Here are some first impressions: This new ship is so elegant you would hardly know that this ship is designed for families with children. The design is mostly art deco, with lovely light fixtures, rich woods, sumptuous fabrics and many special touches. Yes, you will find the usual dashes of Disney whimsy…such as animated artwork, …

Disney Dream christened by Jennifer Hudson; fantastic show features 200 cast and musicians

Yesterday the new Disney Dream cruise ship was christened at Port Canaveral, Fla., as only Disney can do it…with a fabulous show. Approximately 400 cast members and musicians (including the military band from the Jacksonville Naval Base) performed before about 2,000 VIP guests and media before Jennifer Hudson waved a wand and formally named the ship. When she did, a helicopter hoisted a 16-foot champagne bottle from a barge and “broke” it on the bow. The christening …

Tomorrow Chet and I head to Orlando, where we will first spend one night at Walt Disney World and then on Wednesday we board the Disney Dream for its press inaugural cruise. We will only be on board for a couple of days but I will tell you as much as I can about the new ship (and its christening) on this blog. Obviously, there is much anticipation. Disney Cruise Line takes delivery of the new Disney Dream

Disney Cruise Line has taken possession of its newest ship – Disney Dream – from the Meyer Werft shipyard in a traditional maritime ceremony aboard the ship in Bremerhaven, Germany. The Meyer Werft flag was lowered, while the Disney Cruise Line flag was raised, transferring ownership from the shipbuilder to Disney. The milestone closes the book on the ship’s construction journey, which began nearly two years ago in Papenburg, Germany, and signals its readiness to welcome guests …

Cruise companies do a lot of good through their philanthropic programs

This is the time of year when most of us give some serious thought to doing good. We try to help others as best we can either through donations or actions. The cruise lines also do a lot of good through their various philanthropic programs. My good friend, cruise writer Marcia Levin, compiled the following list of what various member lines of the Florida-Caribbean Cruise Association Foundation (FCCA), do to help others: • As one of South …
