Cruise line staterooms can sometimes get a bad rap. But truthfully these staterooms are efficiently designed to make the most of limited space. With pull out couches, pull down berths, trundles, cots, and cribs cruise lines have many options for families. And while many cruise lines offer staterooms can hold a family of 4 it can be a challenge when your family is a bit bigger. There are many options to consider, depending on your budget, including connecting staterooms, 2-bedroom suites or there are several cruise lines have created special family staterooms that will allow your crew to sail in comfort.
Carnival Cruise Line is a favorite for families. They have rooms that can accommodate up to 5 and rooms with an extra bathroom.
Exclusive to Carnival Vista and the Carnival Horizon is Family Harbor, located within a dedicated family zone aft on Deck 2 with 96 specially designed “family ergonomic” accommodations, including extra-large family suites accommodating five guests and featuring two bathrooms.
The Family Harbor Lounge is a secluded space designed as the ultimate family hangout with large screen TVs, board games and complimentary breakfast, cookies and other snacks. An exclusive family concierge maximizes the fun on board, assisting with dining, spa and shore excursion reservations, registering kids for the youth programs and making recommendations on and off the ship for families with kids of all ages.
Family Harbor staterooms include kid-friendly toiletries, bathrobes and slippers while suites feature separate sleeping quarters for parents and children and a walk-in closet. Guests in Family Harbor staterooms also receive a number of exclusive benefits and privileges, including 24/7 card key access to the Family Harbor Lounge, free meals for kids under age 12 in specialty restaurants, and one free evening in Night Owls, a late-night activities program held in Camp Ocean.
Celebrity Cruises offers the Family Veranda Stateroom. At up to 574 square feet this is the largest stateroom with a veranda! These staterooms feature two bedrooms and can sleep five. Celebrity also has many connecting staterooms for larger groups.
Crystal Cruises is a luxury cruise lines that caters to families. Onboard both of their ultra-luxurious ships the offer adjoining staterooms. Crystal Symphony offers ten connecting staterooms and 89 staterooms with a third berth available. On Crystal Serenity, there are 50 connecting staterooms and 154 staterooms with a third berth available.
Cunard does not have any stateroom that they have designated as a “family” stateroom. But they do offer staterooms that will accommodate families comfortably. Your family can live like royalty aboard Cunard Line. The Grand Duplexes aboard the Queen Mary 2 are 2,249 square feet and feature an extensive balcony, a fully stocked bar and a dining area that seats eight. The master bedroom includes private exercise equipment, two dressing rooms with connecting bathrooms and a separate whirlpool bath. Amenities include personal butler service, complimentary bar set up with your choice of spirits or wine and soft drinks, access to the grills lounge and access to the Queens Grill restaurant.
Disney Cruise Line
Disney Cruise Line’s ships are designed for families, so it’s no surprise that most of their staterooms can be considered family staterooms. Bathrooms have bathtubs, many staterooms offer a “split bath” (in most): a bathroom with a vanity, sink, shower and tub and a half bathroom with a vanity, sink and toilet. Deluxe Family Oceanview and Deluxe Family Oceanview with Verandah staterooms also feature a privacy curtain to separate the sitting and sleeping areas. And will love the mural of Peter Pan, Tinker Bell, Wendy and her brothers soaring through a starry sky that is revealed with the upper-berth bed is pulled down.
Their largest stateroom is the Concierge Family Oceanview Stateroom with Veranda. This stateroom sleeps 5 with a queen bed with open frame, double sleeper sofa and upper-berth pull-down bed. And with any Concierge Class stateroom you will enjoy down duvets, a pillow menu, and a media library with music, dvds, video and board games. Concierge class passengers receive priority check in and boarding and access to exclusive areas of the ship.
Holland America Line
Holland America’s newest ships, the Koningsdam and Nieuw Statendam, each offer 32 family ocean-view staterooms. These staterooms range from 222 to 231 square feet and have been reconfigured to feature more living space to spread out and relax. Accommodating up to five guests, family staterooms offer special amenities including two bathrooms and extra closet space.
MSC Cruises offers staterooms for families that can accommodate up to 10 people. They are comprised of two or more connecting staterooms each with its own bathroom. The Super Family stateroom comes at a fixed per-stateroom price, regardless of how many people actually use it. You can choose between Superfamily Plus, Superfamily+ Oceanview or Balcony, Superfamily, Family Balcony and Family Oceanview staterooms.
The Executive & Family Suites (measuring 425 to 547 square feet, without a balcony) each feature a sleeping area (with a double bed that can be converted into two singles) and a partitioned-off living room area with a pullout sofa for two. They accommodate up to four guests and tout extras like a spacious wardrobe and bathtub-equipped bathroom.
And here’s a helpful tip: On the Divina or Preziosa, you can book two adjacent Executive & Family Suites together (ask for staterooms 12002 and 12004), for a super-suite configuration that sleeps up to 8.
Premium accommodations and luxurious appointments are the signature of Princess Cruises’ expansive 460- to 687-square-foot suites. A Family Suite includes a spacious cabin, and large 95- to 241-square-foot balcony, along with special suite-only benefits. Suites feature a separate seating area with a sofabed, walk-in closet, full bathroom and deluxe amenities.
Princess Cruises offers a Two Bedroom Family suite that can sleep up to 8 people. They include a mini suite stateroom connected to an inside cabin via a shared lounge and two bathrooms, one with a tub. And you will also enjoy all the amenities offered to suite guests.
