We awoke this morning in Bamberg, to slightly chilly weather and little flakes of snow, quite perfect for a tour of this lovely old town. We did a walking tour with guide Christian, who told us the history of the town and showed us the cathedral, the royal residences, and the historic buildings, including an ancient brewery, famous for its smokey beer. We ended at the Main square with its traditional Christmas market and wandered for an hour, surrounded by smells of cinnamon and mulled wine and all the colours of Christmas. We sampled the Bamberg Bratwurst, little skinny sausages grilled and served with three of the sausages wrapped in a bun- delicious.
We lingered over coffee with another couple from the ship, Canadians from British Columbia, watching the children and families who were obviously enchanted with the beautiful Christmas displays.
Back on the ship, there was lunch and then a talk from a local historian about the European Union.
Dinner was an Italian affair, in the special Portobello dining room. Guests have to reserve in advance to enjoy this dining experience – a feast of Italian themed dishes paired with lovely wines. Osso Bucco, accompanied by a Chianti Reserva was a highlight.
