Living up to its iconic name, Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas has arrived in Miami ahead of its official debut on Jan. 27.
Celebrating the arrival of the world’s largest cruise ship on Wednesday, Jan. 10, were fireboat salutes, banner planes in flight and numerous folks on hand to welcome Miami’s newest resident.
“Icon of the Seas is the culmination of more than 50 years of delivering memorable vacations, and it’s set to live up to its name in more ways than one when it changes the vacation industry in January 2024,” Michael Bayley, president and CEO of Royal Caribbean International, said in a news release.
The 20-deck Icon of the Seas can carry a maximum of 7,600 passengers and 2,350 crew in 28 types of passenger accommodations including the three-level Ultimate Family Townhouse with an in-suite slide. Icon has officially replaced Royal Caribbean’s Wonder of the Seas as the largest cruise ship in the world.
The ship features eight neighborhoods for a lineup of experiences that combines the best of every vacation – from the beach retreat to the resort escape and the theme park adventure – making the first-of-its-kind adventure the way to get away for every type of family and vacationer.
Icon of the Seas offers the world’s largest waterpark at sea, seven pools, six waterslides and a daredevil Crown’s Edge experience 154 feet above the ocean for a thrilling ropes course adventure.
Onboard the ship, passengers have more than 40 restaurants, bars and lounges plus entertainment across four stages – air, ice, water and theater.
Starting Jan. 27, vacationers can get away on Icon and island hop in the tropics at any time of the year. Each seven-night Eastern or Western Caribbean adventure from Miami features the award-winning private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay in The Bahamas.
In addition, Perfect Day at CocoCay will offer a first adults-only escape, Hideaway Beach. The all-day experience is complete with a private beach and pools, new dedicated spots for drinks and bites, exclusive cabanas, live music and more.
As part of a longstanding maritime tradition, sports icon Lionel Messi will take part in a Jan. 23 official naming of the ship. The most decorated fútbol player in history is the eight-time winner of the prestigious Ballon d’Or award and TIME’s 2023 Athlete of the Year.

“It’s that ability to make such a widespread impact and change the status quo that the Icon of Icon must personify, and Lionel Messi has proven to be the perfect example of that for years in the world of sports and most recently in introducing a new era of excitement and passion for fútbol in Miami and the U.S,” Bayley said.
The Icon of Icon will have the honor of bestowing safekeeping onto the new ship, its crew and the millions of families who will create memories of a lifetime on board in the years to come.
“I’m thrilled and honored to join the Royal Caribbean family to celebrate the arrival of the game-changing Icon of the Seas,” Messi said in a news release. “Icon is beyond anything else that’s out there for family vacations, with incredible never-before-seen features, all designed for making memories together.”
