Luck and some planning means we have a whole day to rest and recover from a ten hour flight and seven hour time change. Today will be devoted to leisure.
The Kempinski Barbaros Bay (www.kempinski.com/en/bodrum/hotel) is the ideal spot for that. This five star property lies in a quiet bay outside of Bodrum. The view from our room at five thirty am – the joys of jet lag! – is of a gorgeous pink and blue sunrise over the Aegean and the curvaceous hotel pool.
The breakfast buffet includes many local specialties, as well as cereals, fruits, breads and egg dishes. There are ten bowls of different kinds of olives, – the usual Turkish breakfast includes cheese and olives, yoghurt and vegetables, so there are platters of these, as well as freshly made flatbreads.
We linger over breakfast, then sun and swim by the pool. It is probably one of the prettiest pools I’ve seen, with an infinity edge that looks over the ocean. In the bay, luxury yachts are moored.
At four, I visited the hotel spa and the Hammam, where a skillful Julie scrubbed, soaked and massaged me into a state of complete relaxation.
We dined in the hotel’s Asian themed restaurant, Saigon, on spring rolls and curry, and watched the sunset, before an early bedtime.
Tomorrow we’ll be ready to explore Bodrum.
