Princess Cruises announces nostalgic diamond anniversary voyage celebrating 60 years

On Dec. 3, 1965, the Princess Patricia cruise ship set sail for her first-ever voyage. To celebrate six decades of delivering dream vacations, Princess Cruises is offering a special 14-day 60th Anniversary Mexican Riviera Voyage onboard the Royal Princess.

The cruise will depart from the Port of Los Angeles on Dec. 6, 2025. The milestone cruise will include some of the same ports that Princess Patricia visited.

“As we prepare to celebrate our 60th anniversary, we can’t help but look back at where it all began with one ship sailing to Mexico,” Gus Antorcha, president of Princess Cruises, said in a press release.

“This commemorative 60th Anniversary Cruise will not only pay tribute to our rich history but also bring together the joy of cruise travel, music and unforgettable moments.”

Joining the 60th anniversary voyage for a memorable performance will be The Temptations, the legendary Motown group behind the classic hit “My Girl.” The Temptations also are celebrating the 60th anniversary of the release of “My Girl,” making the cruise a double milestone event.

Serving as host for the 60th Anniversary Cruise will be actress Jill Whelan, known for her role as “Vicki Stubing” in the beloved TV series “The Love Boat.”

The 14-day 60th Anniversary Mexican Riviera Voyage aboard the Royal Princess sails from Los Angeles on Dec. 6 and includes two overnight stays in Cabo San Lucas and Puerto Vallarta, plus visits to Loreto, Manzanilla and Mazatlán.

The cruise line will mark another milestone in 2025 – the debut of the all-new Star Princess in October. Today, Princess Cruises operates 16 cruise ships sailing to sought-after destinations all over the world.

                                          TV Show Popularized Cruising

The popular “Love Boat” television show is credited with showing viewers how much fun a cruise can be and what a great vacation choice it is to book a journey on a modern cruise ship. “Love Boat” is said to be a major reason for the dramatic expansion of today’s cruise industry. And it all started more than 50 years ago on a Princess ship.

The story goes that in the mid-70s, TV producer Douglas S. Cramer decided to film a series, not in a studio setting but aboard the beautiful environs of a modern cruise ship. Cramer found the ideal setting on a Princess cruise ship.

Cramer teamed up with Aaron Spelling and the movie pilot was shot aboard the Princess ship in Mexico. For 10 seasons, “The Love Boat” was one of the highest rated prime time television shows in the country, taking some of Hollywood’s biggest stars to cruise destinations as story lines always ended on a happy note.

Later episodes and specials were filmed aboard many other Princess cruise ships in destinations around the globe. The original “Love Boat” series is currently in worldwide syndication, having been translated into more than 29 different languages, and is viewed by millions of fans in more than 93 countries.

Before long, viewers began looking forward to seeing the big star of the show – a Princess cruise ship – and booking their own voyages. Today, Princess continues to be known as the “Love Boat” line.
