Which Cruise Line is Best for Your Family? AllThingsCruise’s Expert Guide to Cruising with Children

The cruise experts at AllThingsCruise have done the research for you, covering the spectrum of options: there is  information on mainstream lines like Disney, Royal Caribbean, Carnival and NCL, as well as more unique alternatives like luxury, river cruise and small ship excursion companies.

The age parameters for each classification may vary by line- be sure you check each one individually. Not all lines have children’s programs and the information will reflect their programs and amenities, or lack thereof.

This information is direct from the lines themselves and is subject to change without notice; please confirm details when you book your cruise.

The details of each cruise line’s children’s programs are listed below:

Children

Camp Carnival

It’s everything they love about summer camp and their favorite babysitter, all in one! Camp Carnival offers tons of activities designed for children in three different age groups: 2 to 5 years, 6 to 8 years, and 9 to 11 years. Camp Carnival’s counselors, each with education or childcare experience, are on the clock making sure everyone in the small groups of kids is having fun. When it’s mealtime, kids get their own menus, with faves like mac & cheese, chicken nuggets, and more. And when the sun goes down, they offer Camp Carnival Night Owls (fees apply) so kids get to stay up late having fun, while their parents also enjoy themselves well into the night.

Besides the complimentary Camp Carnival® activities that are available every day, Camp Carnival also has a little thing they like to call Night Owls. It’s the late-night way for kids ages 11 and younger to have a blast! It runs from 10 p.m. to 3 a.m. and includes video games, movies, board games, snacks and drinks. It’s $6.75 USD per hour per child (pricing subject to change). And Camp Carnival makes it easy by charging it to your Sail & Sign® Card.

Camp Carnival has three different Night Owls parties your kids can partake in, all geared toward their age group to make sure they’re having the time of their lives. Owl Jams from 10 p.m. to 12 a.m. is where kids from 2 to 11 can get their arts and crafts on, beat their high score on a video game or just dance to some good ol’-fashioned tunes for $13 USD per child.

Fun ‘Til One from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. for kids ages 6 to 8 which is loaded with dancing, singing and video games for $20 USD per child. And finally, Camp Carnival has Fun at Sea …’Til 3:00 from 10 p.m. to 3 a.m. for $33 USD per child — the go-to party for sporting events, competitions, plus pizza and ice cream! Perfect for kids ages 9 to11. Party fee includes cool giveaways and yummy snacks. Please note a 15 percent gratuity will be added to all Camp Carnival Night Owls program fees.

All Night Owls activities take place in Camp Carnival. There are NO in-stateroom services available. Daytime services are available for infants two and under on port days for the same price. Contact the Camp Carnival Staff on board for specific times of these services as they vary by port.

Camp Ocean

This new marine-themed children’s program for children ages 2 -11 will immerse children in the wonders of the sea through fun, engaging and educational experiences.

Distinctive areas and activities have been designed for each age group from miniature play igloos for the Penguins to interactive gaming stations for the Sharks.

The Camp Ocean program will also have a badge challenge that will allow children the opportunity to earn and collect badges. Badge challenges will include a variety of unique activities that provide an original way for kids to learn about the vessel, experience onboard adventures and gain a sense of accomplishment. Tasks may include trying a new food, making an aquatic towel animal or riding the water slide.

The new Camp Ocean program will debut on the Carnival Freedom in May 2014. Camp Ocean will be introduced on Carnival Magic, Carnival Breeze, and Carnival Triumph later in 2014 and the remainder of the fleet by 2016.

Tweens/Teens

Tweens: What does the “C” in Circle “C” stand for? Well, “chill,” “connect,” and “cool,” just to name a few. It’s where young teens ages 12 to 14 go to hang out, meet new friends, and enjoy some pretty awesome activities like dance parties, games, outdoor movies and more, in the special Circle “C” area or around the ship. It’s all supervised by friendly and fun-loving counselors who want your young teens to have the best vacation ever.

Teens: So, your parents are, like, so annoying … where do you go to hang out with normal people? You know, people who don’t talk about taxes and stuff all the time? Club O2, duh. Hang out and do stuff like watch movies, listen to music from this decade, play sports and video games, join karaoke jam sessions, maybe even have a pool party or two, all with other high schoolers between the ages of 15 and 17. There are even teen-only shore excursions so you can enjoy the sights at Carnival Cruise’s beautiful ports with people you actually aren’t embarrassed to be seen with.

Babies and Tots programs

Join your child in the fun of Royal Babies® or Royal Tots® interactive playgroup sessions developed by early childhood experts at Fisher-Price®. Each 45-minute session, held on one of the onboard lounges, offers activities that make playtime learning time as well.

Children

Kids will have a blast at Royal Caribbean’s complimentary, award-winning Adventure Ocean® Youth Program. Every member of the youth team holds a four-year degree in education, recreation or a related field and has extensive experience working with children. They break kids and teens out into age groups so that they can enjoy specialized programs made to expand their imaginations in interactive, multi-room spaces designed just for them. It’s an awesomely fun, totally edu-taining adventure.* Pirates, Scientists, Artists, Ahoy!

Onboard, kids aren’t just kids. They’re scientists exploring the insect world, eye-patched pirates or the next great athlete to take the gold at the Wacky Olympics. With interactive programs and activities designed just for their age group, Adventure Ocean gives kids the chance to discover a whole new side of themselves.

All children participating in Adventure Ocean activities are required to be 3 years of age, 100 percent toilet trained and diaper and pull-up free.

Aquanauts (Ages 3-5)

These little at-sea adventurers will enjoy the magic of Bubbling Potions, uncover the dinosaur-sized secrets of Jurassic Jr., and take over the ship with the Pirate Party Parade. Parents of 3-year olds can opt for pagers so that Adventure Ocean staff can stay in touch.

Explorers (Ages 6-8)

Space Mud, Fossil Fever, Meteorology Madness! Hands-on science gets young minds churning – along with explorations of the fine arts with Adventure Art and Adventure Theater. Round out the night with dancing through the decades and ice cream for all.

Voyagers (Ages 9-11)

How about a scavenger hunt with new friends from across the world? That’s just the beginning for Voyagers, who enjoy programs including sports tournaments, talent shows, video game showdowns and much more.

DreamWorks Experience

Set sail with Royal Caribbean International and share unforgettable moments with your favorite DreamWorks characters. The young cruisers will enjoy fun activities such as story time, dance parties, parades, ice shows and aqua shows with characters from the DreamWorks Animation movies. Just imagine the laughs when they meet Alex, Shrek, Fiona and more.

Late hours

Kids and teens can enjoy activities into the late evening with extended hours in the Adventure Ocean and teen-only spaces. An hourly rate applies after 10 p.m.

Teens/Tweens

A Little Cool, A Little Chill

Royal Caribbean’s teen program isn’t some structured set of classes or rules – these “almost adults” deserve a vacation all their own. So they give them the freedom they deserve to join pre-planned events throughout the day or simply hang out in teen-only spaces – with Adventure Ocean staff that keep the good times coming.

Ages 12 to 14

Get active with rock climbing competitions, dodgeball and Dance Dance Revolution, then take it down a notch at BBQs and movie nights. Plus, the chance to let your star shine with open mic nights, talent shows and Scratch DJ Academy.

Ages 15 to 17

Join new friends at theme nights, pool parties and teen dinners. Feeling the competitive spirit? Bring it on the karaoke stage, on the Wii or at the basketball court and see who takes home the glory.

Teen-only Hang Outs

Whether you want to chill out or all-out dance, drop by teen-only spaces where you can hang out late. Start at the teen lounge, a laid-back hideaway, and then amp up the energy at the teen-only nightclub.

Teen Spa

Royal Caribbean’s YSpa menu features services made just for teens, including Acne Attack facial, Beach Babe deep conditioning hair treatment, Sole Mate pedicure and more.

Saga Holidays, Ltd.

Saga Cruises are exclusively for those aged 50 and over so there are no children or teenagers on board

Scenic Cruises

Children under 12 years of age are not encouraged except for Christmas tours and cruises. There are no children’s programs aboard Scenic Cruises. Children under 12 years of age must be expressly accepted by Scenic prior to Booking.

Sea Cloud Cruises

We do not recommend a Sea Cloud Cruise for children under 12, as there are no facilities or programs for children.

Seabourn

Due to limited medical facilities, infants 6 months or younger on the date of departure are not permitted to participate in the cruise. Infants Must Be 12 Months or Older on Transatlantic Cruises. There are no special programs for children.

SeaDream Yacht Club

No child under the age of 1 year at the time of sailing will be accepted as a Guest.

Adults with children younger than 13 years of age should perhaps consider SeaDream Yacht Club carefully as an option.

There are no formal children’s programs or babysitting services available on the yacht. In some cases the children’s nanny or au pair traveling with the family is ideal. When families are on board parents are expected to manage the behavior of their children to ensure that the enjoyment of other guests is in no manner compromised. Families who elect to charter the vessel may set up children’s programs and other children’s services not normally available on regular voyages. Please consult the charter department for further information.

Silversea Cruises

Silver Explorer cannot accommodate infants under the age of 1 year. Silver Cloud, Silver Wind, Silver Shadow, Silver Whisper and Silver Spirit cannot accommodate infants under the age of 6 months.
Guests must notify Silversea of any children between the ages of 6 months and 1 year who will be sailing on board the ship. A signed and notarized waiver will be required for all children between these ages.

Although Silversea accepts guests over the age of 6 months (over the age of 1 year for Silversea Expeditions), there are no special programmes for children on board, and Silversea does not provide for the care, entertainment or supervision of children. Silversea reserves the right to limit the number of children less than 3 years of age.

In addition, the Zodiacs used for Silversea Expeditions are unable to accommodate children younger than 6 years of age. As Silversea does not provide babysitting services, an adult family member will be required to remain on board Silver Explorer with their child(ren) during Zodiac excursions.

Children at least 2 years of age are welcome, but there are no structured programs providing supervision and care for young children.

Star Cruises

Children aged 6 months or less at the commencement of the Cruise will be refused permission to board the Vessel and the Carrier shall have no liability whatsoever for any consequences of such refusal. Certain Cruises also have prohibitions on children aged 12 months or less.

Tauck River Cruising

Family travel is important to Tauck River Cruising. The bond between children and adults as they experience the world together makes for special memories that last lifetimes. It is for that reason they created ‘Tauck Bridges’ – journeys for the whole family to enjoy together. Each of these kid-friendly family oriented journeys has a minimum recommended age rating to encourage comfort and enjoyment for all their guests. Tauck Bridges itineraries are not recommended for children under 3 years of age. All children on Tauck journeys must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Thomson Holidays

Kids

3 to 11-year-olds can spend their days onboard at the Thomson Kids’ Club. They’ll get messy with arts and crafts, play dress-up at superhero-themed parties, and search the ship for hidden treasure. Special behind-the-scenes backstage tours and trips to the bridge are also part of the line-up. Groups are split in two, with activities tailored to 3 to 8-year-olds and 9 to 11-year-olds. Best of all, the club is free.

Thomson Cruises split their groups into two. 3 to 6-year-olds are catered for in ‘Palmy’s Pals’ where their team knows what makes little ones tick. Whether it’s face painting or treasure hunting, there’s a lot to keep tots entertained. 7 to 11-year-olds can hang out in ‘Palmy’s Crew’ – a club designed to keep everyone happy, with activities like games and sports. Not to mention the Teens’ Club – for those tricky-to-please, with activities like pool parties and street dancing lessons.

Tweens/Teens

Wannabe Harry Styles’ and budding Lady Gagas will be in their element at the Showtime Stage School on Thomson Cruises. Here, 9 to 16-year-olds can learn the tricks of the trade from the professionals, as the onboard show team put them through their paces with acting, dancing and singing workshops. At the end of the cruise (if there are enough children to join in), they’ll get to show an audience what they’re made of as they take to the stage for a live performance. Three 90-minute lessons cost approximately £35 per child.
