As we get ready to sail from Fort Lauderdale on Princess Cruises, I feel like a guest star on the old TV show, “The Love Boat.”
My ship, of course, is not the Pacific Princess, the vessel I first cruised on, in 1983, between Acapulco and Los Angeles, during filming with actors Gavin MacLeod as Captain Stubing, Bernie Kopell as the doctor, Ted Lange as bartender Isaac, Fred Grandy as Gopher the purser, and Lauren Tewes as cruise director Julie.
That ship has been scrapped. But the old crew has not.
The “Love Boat” cast, invited back as godparents for the naming ceremony Wednesday on the newest Love Boat, Regal Princess, is here in Fort Lauderdale.
The cast is going to sea for a three-night cruise on Thursday, Nov. 6, and I am sailing with them, along with a host of family and friends and my life partner Fran Golden.
The doc stopped by a party last night in the Wheelhouse bar. Gavin MacLeod was spotted in an elevator. This morning, I saw Ohioan Jamie Farr, a guest star from the old “Love Boat” show and best known for his role, and his wardrobe, on “M*A*S*H.”
The next few days will be a great party.
Saturday, at sea, Princess has invited passengers to watch a wedding performed by the real captain, Edward Perrin. Captain Stubing will do a reading.
That will be the opportunity for Fran Golden and me to be guest stars on the new Love Boat, as Fran and David are getting married.
