Traveling to Europe in preparation of trip aboard European Waterways L’Impressionist

They say time flies as you get older. I suppose that is true. It seems as though it was a short time ago that I celebrated a milestone birthday and my son and daughter-in-law invited me to share a June trip to London with them as a birthday gift. Lovely gift, don’t you agree? I’m truth my birthday was six months ago. Judy, Michael and I leave today. BUSSES, PLANES AND TRAINS I came up to Orlando …

Soon Marcia will be heading to France for a barge trip on European Waterways

About 15 years ago my late husband and I sailed on the Thames on a barge from Windsor to Oxford. It was an eight-passenger vessel, but only six were on board. Our fellow passengers were a couple of retired British military officers and a couple from Kentucky. The weather delightful and while our cabin was small, it was a great week of great vistas, great conversations (lasting ’til late at night,) and marvelous food and drink.. At …

The end of Marcia’s Getaway cruise…seven days go so fast!

Farewell, adieu, so-long. All good things come to an end. Today’s the day we wind things up, pack everything we so carefully unpacked on Saturday into suitcases which by 11 tonight must be placed in the hall for pick-up, We will be off the ship around 8 a.m. and Lois will make her 12:11 flight back to New Jersey and I have a party at 1p.m. The key part of that sentence is “carefully unpacked.” Our stateroom, …

Entertainment possibilities abound on the NCL Getaway

ABOARD THE NORWEGIAN GETAWAY — We are en route to Nassau, Bahamas. We’ve left the sightseeing and sunbathing, swimming and shopping in St. Maarten and St. Thomas, USVI, and are heading north. A bit of rain in St. Thomas temporarily dampened the spirits of the 4,000+ people aboard NCL Getaway, but last night — a typical night aboard this party ship — no one would have known that. It was the first night of the Broadway …

NCL Getaway’s “living room” is the atrium on Deck 6

ABOARD THE NCL GETAWAY — We are more than half way through this week-long cruise. Weather has been in our favor and a lot of fellow passengers have passed through 50 shades of red and are already peeling. As I write this, folks are loading up their day bags and hitting the shops and beaches here in St. Thomas,  USVI. One more sea day, then Nassau, then home. Yesterday was our day in St. Maarten/St. Martin, the …

The Getaway offers lots of options…in food and activities…and great showers, too!

ABOARD THE NORWEGIAN GETAWAY — Okay, the third day at sea has begun. As usual, because breakfast is my favorite meal and Lois starts her day with lunch, I had breakfast alone. Today I chose the lovely Taste dining room – Taste, Savor and Tropicana are the three complimentary dining rooms. We dined in Tropicana the first night, and my breakfast in the lovely dining room today, at a window table, was a great way to start …

The new NCL Getaway is big and brassy — a perfect place to escape the Northeastern winter

ABOARD THE NCL GETAWAY — NCL Getaway, the big beautiful and brassy new ship that debuted at PortMiami in February, sailed from that massive port yesterday afternoon. We are en route to St. Maarten on the ship’s weekly Eastern Caribbean itinerary. Armed with a couple of writing assignments, I invited a long-time friend who endured a hideous Northeastern winter to join me. I first met Lois about 20 years ago after a SATW (Society of American Travel …

The Norwegian Getaway offers nearly 30 places to dine and most offer “light” menus

Back in the day, in the 80s, 90s – up until about five years ago – I made my way from deck to deck on cruise ships by taking the stairs. And I sailed a lot, but I never seemed to gain weight on ships, I (moderately) watched what I ate, but I took the stairs and walked the deck and it seemed to work well for me. When I’d be asked “Don’t you automatically gain weight …

There are 25 different stateroom styles on the Getaway

I told you about the Miami feel to NCL’s new ship named the Getaway. Miami Dolphin Cheerleaders, a mojito bar and Pitbull’s music all represent the local culture. I live in South Florida, and have for most of my life. Our culture is unique. It’s exciting to share with the cruising public and the ship is definitely international. It will meet the tastes of the most savvy travelers as well as first-timers who no doubt will fall …

Marcia arrived home fine, but her luggage lagged behind — still, it was a wonderful trip on the Queen Mary 2

Well, I am home Queen Mary 2 docked in Red Hook, Brooklyn, early (really early) Monday morning. I flew out of LaGuardia about 3 p.m .Monday afternoon and arrived in Fort Lauderdale about 7. My suitcase did not. The airline delivered it late yesterday afternoon. While I don’t want to sound like a drama diva, the trip ended on the same discordant note with which it began. Thank goodness, my grandson is fine, he is back in …
