On Friday, April 12, Scenic Cruises officially launched its seventh jewel in a crown of river-cruising ‘Space-Ships,’ Scenic Jewel. This new luxury ship accommodates 169 passengers in 85 cabins. Scenic Jewel joins a fleet of six ‘Space-Ships’: Scenic Crystal, Diamond, Emerald, Pearl, Ruby and Sapphire. Scenic Cruises ‘Space-Ships’ have established a new luxury river ship standard, offering top design aspects and numerous amenities that have yet to be matched by any other river cruise line sailing the majestic rivers of Europe and Russia.
Scenic Jewel, along with the rest of Scenic’s ‘Space-Ships’ (five of which were rebuilt this winter to match the Jewel’s specifications), offers more public space than ever before with nearly all staterooms and suites featuring the signature Scenic ‘Sun-Lounge.’ These private full-size walk-out balconies convert into all-weather sealed lounges with just the push of a button. This indoor lounge provides guests with the opportunity to always enjoy the advantage of extra space throughout the cruise, regardless of weather. Each cabin also boasts a queen-size ‘Scenic Slumber-Bed’ with a pillow menu, a 32-inch Samsung high-definition television that’s linked to a MiniMac computer, providing easy access to in-cabin Internet and e-mail capabilities thanks to an upgraded Wi-Fi system that uses both satellite and UMTS mobile technology for faster speeds.
The Jewel and her sisters offer a selection of unique amenities, including five dining opportunities raging from the intimate Table la Rive to the Italian-based Portobello Restaurant to 24-hour room service – all with service of complimentary premium wines, beers and soft drinks. Additional features include large walk-in showers and Egyptian linens in the cabins, a 24-hour fitness center with top-rated equipment and electric assist bicycles. Another unique aspect of these ships is that guests can enjoy sailing in near silence, as the fleet features double-insulated enclosures and a new configuration for the engines and props that reduce vibration.
Besides showcasing European river cruising’s most luxurious ships, Scenic is committed to the concept of “fully inclusive,” a step above the often used “all-inclusive.” All Scenic guests can enjoy private butler service; unlimited complimentary beverages (top-shelf brands are additional) including daily minibar replenishment; 24-hour room service; world class culinary; themed dinners with entertainment; and complimentary Wi-Fi. Also available on the Jewel and most of the fleet is Scenic Riverview, which is a personal onboard GPS system that provides commentary on sites as the ship passes them, as well as Scenic’s new exclusive “Tailormade” system – a personal handheld GPS unit that includes full audio and mapping during independent touring ashore – whether walking and cycling. The fares incorporate all excursions including the exclusive Scenic Enrich options, gratuities onboard and ashore, airport transfers and more. Guests only have to pay for souvenirs and personal items they may need. The debut of Scenic Jewel is one more indicator of the popularity of river cruising. Ever committed to providing top service to travelers, Scenic will introduce an eighth ‘Space-Ship,’ Scenic Gem, to the fleet next year.
