Royal Caribbean’s Teen Program- Is it cool enough?

So maybe I’m just on a Royal Caribbean kick this month, or maybe their programs really are just that awesome.  I’m in the process of sifting through information on all the  cruise lines children’s programs (and don’t be fooled… this isn’t all stuff for babies or toddlers, although some of it is) and their teen program just seems to be a standout.

Most parents will tell you that there has to be a certain “coolness” factor  for teen activities, or older kids are just not going to be interested.  For instance, most will give a thumbs up to a teens-only lounge or club, but frown on an organized teen Bridge tournament.  So as I’m looking at the wealth of information available, I’m trying to figure out which of these programs include the widest variety of activities that will engage teens across the board, with their varied interests, and I have to say, I think Royal Caribbean has a winner here.

It almost makes me want to be a a kid again.  Almost.

Here’s a listing, direct from RCI, of the available activities for older kids:

A Little Cool, A Little Chill

Our teen program isn’t some structured set of classes or rules – these “almost adults” deserve a vacation all their own. So we give them the freedom they deserve to join pre-planned events throughout the day or simply hang out in teen-only spaces – with Adventure Ocean staff that keep the good times coming.

Ages 12 to 14

Get active with rock climbing competitions, dodgeball and Dance Dance Revolution, then take it down a notch at BBQs and movie nights. Plus, the chance to let your star shine with open mic nights, talent shows and Scratch DJ Academy.

Ages 15 to 17

Join new friends at theme nights, pool parties and teen dinners. Feeling the competitive spirit? Bring it on the karaoke stage, on the Wii or at the basketball court and see who takes home the glory.

Teen-only Hang Outs

Whether you want to chill out or all-out dance, drop by teen-only spaces where you can hang out late. Start at the teen lounge, a laid-back hideaway, and then amp up the energy at the teen-only nightclub.

Teen Spa

Our YSpa menu features services made just for teens, including Acne Attack facial, Beach Babe deep conditioning hair treatment, Sole Mate pedicure and more.

What do you think, would your teen go for any (or all) of this?  Can you tell me about a great experience with an onboard teen’s program? Or, let me know what you would love to see included that you haven’t found onboard yet… you can do so in the comments below.

I am 17 years old and have gone on Royal Caribbean cruises since I was 11 and love the teen program and am sad it is my last year in it. You meet friends quick and about 75% of the prescheduled activities I find appealing to me. If you do have teens make sure they go the first night since the groups get set pretty fast meaning who hangs out with who and they don’t change much trust me I have experience. The staff are always nice some cooler than others and curfew is at 1 am no exceptions which I am not a fan of. If your teens are shy still go because eventually they will find friends and on cruises during break there are plenty to choose from. If you don’t see them all day that’s good I see my parents only at dinner and in the morning and the occasional mid day awkward hi and bye. So have a great cruise on the best Royal Caribbean International.

Hey, thanks Dan, it’s always great to get the perspective of someone who’s taken part in the program. Thanks for the tip about going on the first night.
