Holland America has an ongoing effort to support cancer research through its fundraising programs, and this week, the line will hold On Deck for a Cause events on all 15 ships in support of World Cancer Day.

The premise of On Deck for a Cause is simple; it encourages guests of all ages to participate in an onboard (noncompetitive) 5k fundraising walk, with a donation of $20. Participants of the walk receive an On Deck for a Cause T-shirt, wristband, and special reception.

The On Deck for a Cause events have raised over $200,000 since their launch in mid 2013. Eighty percent of proceeds are distributed to the American Cancer Society, Canadian Cancer Society, Cancer Council Australia, Cancer Research UK, Deutsche Krebshilfe (German Cancer Aid) and KWF Kankerbestrijding (Dutch Cancer Society), with the remainder going to administrative costs.

These walks take place on more than 500 cruises each year.
