The first thing to know about me is my name. It is spelled like “Jerry” but pronounced “Gary.” No, my parents don’t know why. I even blogged about it – “Gerry Pronounced Gary,” if you want to know more. The second thing would be I am a life-long journalist. (Remembering the famous words of one journalism grad: “Four years ago I couldn’t spell journalist, and now I are one.”) My career has taken me through The Austin American-Statesman, The Fort Worth Star-Telegram, The Dallas Morning News, The Columbus (Ohio) Dispatch, the Tampa Tribune and The Palm Beach Post, where I am currently.
Writing is my first love. Feature writing, opinion columnist, entertainment, including five years as a rock music critic. When I landed in Florida, I got the opportunity to write about travel, and specifically, cruise travel. I was hooked. More than a dozen cruises later, my wife and life companion, Pamela and I launched a blog, Cruising Squared (www.cruisingsquared.com) . Actually, travel has been a major part of our lives since that first honeymoon trip to St. John in the Virgin Islands. What can be better than combining two great loves – travel and writing? Pam is now working on a new e-novel, which limits her time on the blog. But I’m so jealous (and proud) she got a book out before I did. You can find her on Amazon:
What else do you need to know about me? We have one son, Brandon, a recent graduate of the University of Miami Law School and Reggie, a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel who also lays claim to a big piece of our hearts. Both Pam and I subscribe to the Auntie Mame philosophy: “Life is a banquet, and most poor suckers are starving to death.” So in that spirit, Bon voyage!
