Enjoying a spa day on the final day in Hong Kong

DAY 9–I’ve been to spas all around the world—tiny outdoor ones in Belize and fancy resort ones in ski country, on big ships

and Hawaiian gardens in Mexico and Tahiti.

But I don’t think I’ve ever indulged in a major city. Hong Kong has made me rethink that. Of course here massage is a part of the culture—locals hawk reflexology on street corners for as little as $10 US.

But major hotels are getting into the act from the year old Ritz-Carlton, the tallest hotel in the world to the Four Seasons to the newly renovated and oh-so-hip Mira Hotel where I’m staying with its huge pool Jacuzzi and spa.

After a frenetic week reporting—not to mention serious jet lag—I figured there couldn’t be a better way to while away my last morning before my return flight than experiencing the Mira Hotel’s spa.

Outside might be Hong Kong’s busiest shopping area with crowds of people going in every direction. But here is all serenity. I have a VIP suite called JOURNEY to myself complete with steam shower and private Jacuzzi. I could spend all day here if not for having to get to the airport for my 15-hour flight home.

The massage is excellent—a mix of western and eastern techniques that soothes my aching shoulders and back. I especially love the hot stones.

The treatment starts with a foot scrub and then I choose the oils—I opt for detoxifying. It is one of the nicest and most relaxing massages I’ve ever had. I top it off with a facial treatment that I hope will make me look years younger. Even if it doesn’t, I leave feeling refreshed and relaxed.

And sometimes, you can’t ask for more than that.
