Departing on our Silversea cruise from the Canary Islands to Ft. Lauderdale

We are about to depart for our next cruise. For the past four years, each autumn we have taken a “repositioning” cruise across the Atlantic Ocean.

The first trip was from Athens to San Juan. The second was from Rome to Ft. Lauderdale. Last year we took the North Atlantic route and sailed from Copenhagen to Ft. Lauderdale visiting such unusual places as Iceland and Greenland along the way.

This trip we are reverting to the more familiar Southern route, but with yet another itinerary. On our previous two trips, we spent 4-5 days hitting ports in Europe before we did the crossing. This time we begin in the Canary Islands, then immediately make the crossing, and then end up for 4-5 days in small Caribbean ports. We love the variety.

We will be sailing for 14 days on the ultra-luxurious Silver Spirit, the newest small ship of Silversea Cruises.

A repositioning cruise is one in which the company is moving a ship from one region of the world to another. In these cases, the ships were either moving from the Mediterranean or the Baltic.

We like repositioning cruises for many reasons. The pricing is always good. The itineraries are unusual, often offering ports not included on regular trips. The people aboard tend to be veteran cruisers who prefer this leisurely type of trip. And for someone who writes about cruising, the many days at sea offer the opportunity to study a particular cruise line in depth.

So tomorrow we are off to Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the capital of the Canary Islands. Although part of Spain, they are located just off the northwest coast of mainland Africa. We will be there for two nights, enjoying exploring a new place while we make sure that all of our luggage reaches us.
