Our first river cruise on the ms Swiss Pearl was disappointing. Considering we were cruising the Rhone river in the French countryside, we experienced little of the French food expected on such a cruise. Many of our dinners included food which was a mystery to many of us -- definitely not French. Not a crepe in sight!

Ironically we would see much fresh produce and lovely pastries on our excursions but not our ship. Breakfast buffet included canned fruit. Fresh grapefruit and bananas were at a minimum. The wait staff although usually friendly, lacked experience. There was very little selection at the bar as well. My meagre margarita was served half-filled in a martini glass.

Excursions were very interesting but always took place first thing after breakfast until around noon where we came back to the ship for lunch and then cruised off in the afternoon. Travelling at night would have been better so that we could go back on shore to visit the port cities on our own in the afternoon. One of the wine tours advertised in the itinerary was canceled without notice.

Considering the price of this cruise, the age of the ship and the lack of quality in the food and service, I would not recommend it to friends.
