Friday, May 13, Frankfurt, Germany
I really should refer to this boat as ‘an Avalon river boat’ as she won’t be officially christened until tomorrow, and so has not received the blessing of her name yet. But “the ship” is ready, and she’s beautiful! Everything is shiny and new, and the staff are obviously proud and a little nervous that everything will go well.
And so far all is unfolding as it should. Passengers began arriving at the docking station in Frankfurt at mid-day to fresh new cabins with fat white eiderdowns and pillows, marble bathrooms and smart contemporary design.
The ship is decidedly spacious for a river boat. The Panorama class suites are 11 feet wide and 7 feet high, with a wall of glass that slides open to almost 7 feet, turning the whole room into an open balcony.
Among the comforting touches are an elevator, a spacious fitness center, panoramic views from every space on the ship, wi-fi throughout the ship and a top-end cappuccino machine using LaVazza coffee in the club lounge that produces great lattes and espressos 24 hours a day.
The central lobby is brightened by a circular skylight, amenities are by L’Occitane, and there are two large Royal Suites.
The buzz for this new classy ship has been huge, and its popularity has inspired Avalon to commission a sister ship to debut next summer.
Tomorrow she will officially join the Avalon family.
